Almost Happy New Year

It may feel like the New Year is already here, but according to the Chinese calendar, we are still in the closing phase of the old year, with the official New Year beginning in February.
As we come to the close of the Year of the Snake, I’ve found myself reflecting on the conversations I’ve had with so many of you over the past year.
In Chinese medicine, the Snake is deeply linked with transformation, wisdom, and shedding old skins. But shedding is not always comfortable. Often, it asks us to look closely at what is no longer working, what we have outgrown, and what we may have been holding onto out of habit or fear.
If the past year has felt challenging, there is often a reason. Many of you have been navigating periods of uncertainty, big decisions, and emotional crossroads. For some, this showed up as work stress, questioning whether to stay or leave, and confronting fears around security and change. For others, it appeared through relationships, reassessing what you are prepared to accept, and learning where your boundaries truly lie.
In the clinic, fear often speaks through the body. Anxiety, restless sleep, and a sense of being unable to switch off are common. Indecision can manifest physically too. Tight necks and shoulders, clenching of the jaw, or a feeling of pressure behind the eyes are all ways the body communicates inner conflict.
Boundaries, the Lungs, and the Metal Element
Within Five Element Theory, boundaries belong to the Metal element, and specifically the Lungs. The Lungs are not just about breathing. They are about clarity, truth, and discernment. They help us decide what we let in and what we let go of, emotionally, mentally, and physically.
When Lung energy is balanced, we are able to set clear, healthy boundaries. We know what feels right and what does not. We can say yes with ease and no without guilt.
When Lung energy is weakened or overwhelmed, this may show up as:
Recurrent coughs or colds
Low immunity
Shortness of breath or shallow breathing
Grief that feels stuck or unresolved
Difficulty letting go of people, habits, or situations
Many people I supported this year were unknowingly strengthening their Lung energy by learning to honour themselves more fully. Saying no. Creating space. Choosing themselves, sometimes for the first time.
The Snake’s Lesson
The Snake teaches us that growth requires honesty. Sometimes the discomfort we experience is not something to fix, but something to listen to. The body asks us to see clearly what no longer fits, even when that seeing is uncomfortable.
I want to say how deeply I honour the courage it takes to do this work. I’ve been proud to walk alongside many of you as you faced life’s challenges, not by bypassing them, but by meeting them with curiosity and self compassion.
My role is not just to treat symptoms, but to help you understand the language your body is speaking. Pain, tension, fatigue, and emotional patterns are not random. They are messages.
The Pillars of Health
We often talk about the pillars of health. Nutrition, sleep, movement, and herbal medicine all matter. They are essential foundations.
But even with the most supportive diet and the right supplements, if the emotional patterns beneath the symptoms are not addressed, the body often returns to the same loop. Symptoms may ease temporarily, only to return in a different form.
True healing happens when we listen beneath the surface.
Winter, Reflection, and the Pause Before Movement
Chinese New Year does not begin until February, and we are still in winter. This is a season of slowing down, reflection, and restoration. It is not a time to force change or push New Year’s resolutions.
Winter belongs to the Water element, the Kidneys, and deep reserves. It asks us to rest, to review, and to gently gather information about where we are heading next.
As the end of February approaches, we begin to transition toward spring, and with it, the Year of the Horse.
The Horse, Wood Energy, and Moving Forward
The Horse carries strong Wood energy. Wood is about direction, growth, and forward movement. When Wood energy flows well, we feel motivated, clear, and able to take aligned action.
When Wood is constrained or stuck, it often shows up as:
Frustration or irritability
Resentment simmering beneath the surface
A sense of feeling stuck or unable to move forward
Physical pain along the Liver and Gallbladder channels
This can include:
Headaches, especially on the sides of the head
Neck and shoulder tension
Jaw tightness
Hip stiffness
Aches and tightness running down the sides of the body and into the ankles
Many people describe this state simply as “being stuck”, emotionally and physically. The body mirrors the inner experience.
If winter has been honoured well, if the lessons of the Snake have been understood, then the Horse offers momentum. Movement becomes easier. Decisions feel clearer. Life begins to flow forward again.
Will We All Experience the Same Year?
A question I was asked in clinic this week was whether everyone experiences the same year energetically. The answer is no.
These energies exist around us collectively. You may sense them in the mood of the country, the wider world, or simply in the air. Many people are ready to move on from recent challenges and step into something new.
But if old patterns remain unexamined, the same themes can continue to repeat, in life and in the body.
So I Leave You With This
As the Year of the Snake draws to a close, take a moment to reflect.
What have you learned?
What have you outgrown?
What are you ready to shed?
And as the Horse approaches, ask yourself what direction you want to move in next.
If you feel you need support to understand what your body is asking of you, or to navigate change with clarity and steadiness, I’m here. Acupuncture, alongside life and health coaching, offers a way to work with both the physical symptoms and the deeper patterns beneath them.
Now is the time to take action, to move forward with intention, and to make the most of the energy the Year of the Horse brings.
Warmest Wishes
Sam
