Are My Hormones running out? Understanding the Whole Picture

It’s a conversation that’s been coming up a lot in clinic this month

“My cycle’s changing… I’ve got brain fog and mood swings. I’m anxious, can’t sleep Is this perimenopause?”

“Should I get my hormones tested?”

“Can I do anything to balance my hormones?”

Hormones and perimenopause are finally being talked about more openly and that’s a good thing. But I want to gently ask: should we blame everything on hormones?

The truth is, your hormones don’t operate in isolation. They aren’t tucked away in one corner of your body doing their own thing.

They’re chemical messengers constantly responding to your inner and outer world and they only work as well as the environment they’re living in. So before we jump to conclusions or quick fixes, let’s walk this back a little. Let’s ask:

What is actually controlling your hormones?

Every single day, your body is quietly assessing your world.

Is it safe?

Do I have enough energy?

Can I manage everything on my plate today?

And even if you’re not trying to get pregnant your body is still wired to ask: Would now be a good time to conceive?

Energy In = Hormones Out

Your body builds its hormones from what you give it:

Food. Water. Breath. Rest. Movement

From these resources, it creates the substances you need to work, move, think, feel, and if the time is right build a healthy womb lining.

But what happens when those resources run low?

Let’s say it’s been a month of skipped breakfasts, late-night dinners, or you’re trialling a new fasting routine.

Your body might struggle to build up enough blood to form a full uterine lining. Your period might become shorter, paler, or lighter this is what we call blood deficiency in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The Sleep & Brain Fog Connection

Now let’s talk about sleep. Even just 2–3 nights a week of disrupted or insufficient sleep from children waking, or worrying about your teenager who is out late 🙋‍♀️or emotional unrest can create real shifts in your mood, blood sugar, and mental clarity.

Think of the mornings when poor sleep makes you crave sugar or carbs that quick hit of energy?

Your body is trying to cope, but it all affects your hormonal balance and fertility signalling.

Stress: The Ultimate Hormone Disruptor

And then there’s stress a big topic (and one we could write a whole newsletter about on its own).

If you’ve been rushing from one thing to the next, riding an adrenaline wave and feeling constantly “on,” your body is likely producing a steady stream of cortisol. And as Whoopi Goldberg said so memorably, your body is getting the message “You in danger, girl.”

When your stress hormones dominate, your body deprioritises ovulation.

Even if your LH surge (which tells the ovary it’s time to release the egg) looks perfect on paper the ovary still gets the final say.

If your body senses that now isn’t a safe time, it might skip ovulation altogether. Again this doesn’t mean you are running out of eggs! This can show up as longer or irregular cycles, or even a missed period.

The Pregnenolone Steal

Here’s where it gets even more interesting. Your body uses a hormone precursor called pregnenolone to make both progesterone and cortisol.

When stress is high, your body diverts pregnenolone toward cortisol production to help you “survive” leaving less available for progesterone.

This doesn’t mean you’re running out of progesterone it means your body is choosing to protect you.

But the effects are still real:

You may feel more anxious, struggle to sleep, or find yourself teary or wired in the lead-up to your period.

That’s because progesterone is our soothing, calming hormone it slows us down, helps us rest, and prepares the body for menstruation or conception.

So… Should You Get Your Hormones Tested?

Maybe. But not before asking a few key questions:

  • Have I eaten consistently and nourished myself this month?

  • Am I sleeping enough and sleeping well?

  • Am I managing my stress or feeling overwhelmed and burnt out?

  • What are my emotions trying to show me right now?

  • Does my body feel safe?

Because unless we address the foundation the way you live, rest, eat, feel, and breathe we risk trying to treat symptoms without understanding their roots.
