How does acupuncture treatment work?

Perhaps you’ve heard of acupuncture before, but have never been quite sure how it works?

Acupuncture is a complex and precise therapy derived from Chinese medicine.

The placement of needles at specific points of the body stimulate nerves in the skin and muscles to create pain-relieving endorphins, unblocking areas of stagnancy in the body for long-term benefits over repeated treatments.

Clear evidence of positive effects from acupuncture has been found for migraines, tension headaches, chronic low back pain and knee osteoarthritis, as well as many other health conditions.

Our acupuncture therapists, Sam and Paul, are both fully trained members of the British Acupuncture Council.

I have suffered with a bad back for many years and since coming to see Sam it's improved no end. This was my first ever experience of Tui Na massage and cupping therapy. Would highly recommend.

Acupuncture treatment is an ongoing approach to pain management and healing. We recommend a minimum of four sessions, but some may require longer. Your therapist will discuss a treatment plan with you at your initial session.

Let’s get to the root of your symptoms

For all new patients, it starts with an initial 1.5hr session. We take a full medical history and discuss your symptoms, examine your tongue (which contains telltale clues about your health), and talk about any family history of illness so we can put an acupuncture treatment plan to give you the best outcome.

Programme of 1-hour acupuncture sessions

Sessions include a combination of acupuncture, deep tissue work, Tui Na (Chinese medical massage), Gua Sha, moxibustion, vibration therapy, cupping therapy or acupressure. Needles stay in place from 10-20mins. To finish your treatment a specially selected tincture will be applied to further enhance the treatment.

Advice for aftercare between treatment

We’ve still got you covered between visits. Advice will be given on how best to manage your condition and may include specific exercises, ear seeds to help manage pain, or magnet therapy. It may also include nutritional advice, supplement recommendations or stretches to follow. A plan will be completely tailored to you.
